Our Celebrity Reader.... Bishop Rhoades

Bishop Rhoades was our Celebrity Reader on Thursday afternoon. We are so lucky and blessed to have him visit us and share a story. Bishop Rhoades read "You Are Special", a wonderful book from Mrs. Z's collection. The First and Second Graders were captivated by this expression-filled reading.

Amazing Celebrity Readers!

Celebrity Readers we had this week! 

Miss Curry, our Fifth Grade Teacher, came to visit on Tuesday. She read one of Miss Boocher's favorite stories, "Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon". 

Thank you for reading to us, Miss Curry. She even joined in our "second picture has to be a silly one" program.  

Mrs. Green, Aliceya's Grandma, came to visit on Wednesday. She read one of our favorite stories about dinosaurs, "Dinosaurs Wear Underpants". What a silly story!

Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Sanders, Kelsey's mom, came to read several different poems from her favorite author, Shel Sliverstein.

Mrs. Sanders surprised us with cookie sandwiches following her reading.

Mrs. Williams, our Eighth Grade Teacher, visited the Second Graders on Thursday as our first Celebrity Reader of the day.

Mrs. Williams was a captivating reader who taught us about our 50 states and our country's presidents!

 Mrs. Williams happily joined in our "second silly picture" tradition.

Mrs. Maz Comes to Read!

Mrs. Maz was our first Celebrity Reader of the week! 

She decided to share one of her favorite stories with us, "Sleeping Ugly". The Second Graders thoroughly enjoyed her expression-filled reading! We were even able to pick up on the moral of the story...It doesn't matter what you look like on the outside; it's being beautiful on the inside that is important! We know that Mrs. Maz is gorgeous on the inside, as well as on the outside!

Catholic Schools Week Field Trip

Following tradition, we celebrated the end of Catholic Schools Week with a trip to USA Skating Rink. 

 On our way to the skating rink, I noticed some highly motivated readers!

 Look at those timers just counting away! Keep it up!

 Once we arrived at the skating rink, it was all fun and games. Some of us are experienced skaters, while others are still practicing. I was happy to see the second graders sticking together and helping each other around the rink.

 We had a wonderful time together at the skating rink. 

Even though we had two snow days, Catholic Schools Week was still a huge successful celebration of what makes our school and classes unique. 

 

Celebrity Reader Dr. Green

We welcomed Aliceya's Grandfather, Dr. Mark Green, as our second Celebrity Reader. 

 We really enjoyed the two books he brought in to share.

Let’s Share the Experience with Others!

After much consideration towards what reading challenge our class would do for WSBT’s I Love to Read Challenge, we have decided to focus on the “love to read” aspect. We discussed our passion, simple like or, in some rare cases, dislike for reading and how important reading is.

Our complete focus for WSBT’s I Love to Read Challenge is to learn to enjoy reading in various ways. We will have celebrity readers, including parents, grandparents, other teachers and community members. We will watch videos of our favorite authors and even some new authors reading us their stories. We will take a deeper look into familiar books and explore the surface of new adventures. We will learn to look at a book in a different light.

In addition to expanding on our love for reading, the Second Grade Class is holding a book drive! The Second Graders researched several different organizations who take book donations for various causes. After looking into them, we voted on our favorite organization. We have decided to collect books to donate to Books For Africa!

When asked why they wanted to donate books, students responded with several amazing reasons. Here are just a few…

“We want to give people a chance to read.”

“We want to let others experience the joy of reading.”

“The few books they do have are all damaged, torn or old.”

“Books are amazing! I want everyone to know that.”

“God teaches us to share. We should share our books with others.”

Reading Camp Out!

WSBT's I Love to Read Challenge begins today!

We had a reading camp out to start the challenge off on the right page. Students brought in pillows and we made tents. After each student received their special book from Miss Boocher, they found a comfortable spot under a tent and started collecting reading minutes. Take a look at our spectacular readers in action!
